Texture Photography Approach To Eye-catching Photographs

apple-the-entertainment

A photographic image is successful when it successfully grabs the attention of the viewers. Images can do this in a variety of ways. Some images depend on bold color. Other photos utilize leading curves. Dramatic scenery is also used for this specific purpose. On the other hand, there exists a method that is quite often overlooked. That method is the use of texture. Thus, the objective of this article is to cover the essentials of texture photography.

Of course, the first thing that needs to be done is to define texture photography. The definition of texture photography is really very simple. The images of texture photography derive at least part of their impact through the use of texture.

Texture will be defined as the surface detail of an object. This detail can be made up of surface irregularities (such as the wood grain of an old plank) or of small forms on a surface (such as a mass of roots from an ancient tree).

Three Types of Texture Photography

This article will cover three of the most common forms of texture photography — texture used to enhance detail, drama, or information.

Detail: With detail texture photography, the detail of an object’s surface is the most important aspect of an image. The actual object is of lower value. There are a couple of approaches to detail images. The image can be taken as a macro shot. That way, the camera is moved in close to really expose the texture. The other approach is to photograph only a part of an object (which also focuses the attention on the texture). An example of this type of texture image would be a close-up of the patterns found in old rock formations.

Typically, the best light for this type of image is side light. Side light will enhance the detail in any uneven surface by casting shadows.

Drama: With drama texture photography, the texture helps to bring out the drama in an image. In this use of texture, the texture is not the principal feature of the image. Instead, it is one component of the image that serves to spice up the image.

A key point is that, typically, the contrast or color of the texture serves to catch the viewer’s interest. So, it is essential to pick a subject that has good color or contrast.

A good example of texture used for drama would be the patterns of layered rock in the Grand Canyon glowing in the late afternoon sun.

An important point is that side light works well with these images. The side light casts shadows that emphasize the texture and, thus, the drama.

Information: Utilizing texture to communicate information about a photographic subject is the last form of texture photography that we will review. In an information texture image, the texture tells part of the tale of the image by communicating something about the image. A case in point would be an image of an aged, dilapidated, wooden walkway at a remote beach. In this case, the aged wood suggests that the beach has a history that could not be communicated by an image of just the white, beach sand.

For information texture images, it is crucial to identify specifically what information the texture is to communicate and compose the image in such a manner that the texture brings out the right message. The outcome will be a better image.

One other essential point is to make certain that the texture has a subservient role in this kind of image. Put simply, the texture should help to enhance the center of interest not overwhelm the center of interest.

Basic Professional Photography Poses!

Seeking out and learning various photography poses is the quickest and simplest route to becoming a sought after photographer. Even if you never decide to go “pro”, becoming a master of the basic photography poses will put pizzazz in your photography. If you want to start getting YOUR percentage of “oohs and aahs”, keep reading…

The Football player-

The most typical error I see in inexpert photos – and in more pro work than you may imagine is what I call the “Linebacker” pose.

Consider a professional football player. (The United States kind, not what we in the U.S. think of as soccer.) Size is a large component of their job. The bigger and wider they appear to be, the better. When they pose for photos, they try to face the camera’s lens straight on – making their shoulders look as wide as they can. They will want their hips and thighs to appear huge as well.

The more of the frame they can fill, the better – intimidation is their target.

Now picture virtually everyone else in the world-few of them are trying to appear intimidating in their pictures.

Take Off The Appearance Of Excess Size-

To help our model’s desire to get rid of that “footballer” look, simply have them twist their shoulders so they’re about 45 degrees to the lens. This appears natural, and is the most slimming pose. If they’re visible in the photo, the model’s hips, legs and feet should be turned too.

Rule of thumb-Shoulders, hips, legs and feet should never be straight on to the camera.

?Avoid??? The “Sumo Wrestler” Pose Too!

While linebackers want to look broad – they don’t necessarily want to appear fat! The only photo subject I can think of that actively has a use for looking fat is a Sumo wrestler.

Throughout the known universe, and even more so in the United States we almost ALL feel that we look too fat! (With valid reason.) It has turned into an obsession. How many times have you heard the phrase “the camera adds 10 pounds?” To make our subjects to visually lose some pounds, think about what makes us appear visually heavy! It’s the shadows!

We visually define shape by highlights and shadow. If we minimize shadows, people will look slimmer. Have your subjects posing in dark clothing and the shadows disappear – and so does the weight.

Start employing these two photography poses ideas and you’ll see immediate improvement in your photos.

How To Make A Pure White Photography Background

entertainment

I am frequently asked – by frustrated photographers – what materials they should be using to accomplish a crisp, spotless, pure white photography background.

Regrettably, that often is the incorrect question to raise! It in fact, isn’t the backdrop material that will give you the sparkling white you are looking for.

It is the source of the light!

Here is the situationyou put up a spotless white bed sheet or a roll of white paper – and you place your model in front of it.

You set up a light source or two and light your model. All is appearing good. You think you have got a correctly lit model and a pleasant white set.

Now, you take the shot.

Apprehensively, you run to the photo lab if you’re shooting film or to your computer if you’re shooting digital. You check the completed photo and ta daaa!

Your model is perfectly lit, but the backdrop is really a dull gray color. Not the sparkling, untainted white you saw in the viewfinder!

Seem familiar? If you have been having a tough time creating high key photographsAnd you have been creating that dingy gray color (no matter what materials you employ) here’s the way to fix the situation!

All light has a certain drop off aspect.

By that I mean the further the light is from a subject matter, the dimmer it is. As a result, meaning when you’ve got a specific amount of light hitting your model, and you’re using that SAME illumination to light your backdrop, your light is further from the set than from your subject. Hence, it will be a little less bright when it gets to your background substance.

Whew! That’s a mouthful. In other words…

The reason you are shooting that gray color is because there is more light hitting your subject than is hitting the photography background.

To get your background be an absolute, flawless whitejust hit it with MORE illumination than you will be using for the model!

Appears obvious as soon as you comprehend it, but this is a major sticking point for a lot of shooters.

The amount of “over-exposure” you should have on the background is dependent upon the color of the backdrop material. If it is already white, you could get by with using an adequate amount of additional illumination to have an over-exposure around half an f-stop. Possibly even one full f-stop.

If the material you are starting with is graythat’s okay too! Just strike it with roughly 2 stops (give or take) more illumination than you will be using for the model.

Here is one which will blow a number of mindsimagine if your photography background material is really a pure black piece of material – or black roll of paper?

It does not make any difference! Zap it with 5, 6 or perhaps even 7 additional stops worth of light (over what you happen to be using on the main subject matter) and you will again have a pleasant sterile white set.

This is a LOT of illumination and I wouldn’t advocate starting out with a black background. When you begin closer to white initially, it is a lot easier. Nevertheless, attempt it! It’s a fun experiment and can educate you quite a bit regarding light!

The point being – with an adequate amount of illumination, you can get a nice white photography background no matter what type or color fabric you start with.

Photography Marketing Tip The Power Of Determining Your Target Market For Your Business

entertainment venues

Trying to market a photography business without having a very specific “Target Market” is like trying to play football without a goal line. How will you ever make a touchdown, or know which direction you should be going?

I’m amazed at how many photographers just try to “get their name out there.” I hate that statement! It says nothing and means even less. What’s important to your success is WHO you go after in the market place.

Why? Because you have a limited budget – both in time and money. So you must pick very carefully who you want to work with, and then go after them with a passion. You can not be all things to all people, and expect to be truly successful in your photography business. You’re going to have to pick and choose.

Honestly, good photography marketing is more about “picking who” than it is about just trying to blindly “get your name out there” to everyone.

What I’m saying is that success in photography marketing is all about the “Target Market.” Let me explain:

Your “Target Market” is that group of folks who you want to invest time and money into convincing them to contact and work with you. It’s where you put all your efforts.

Let me give you an example: There are three major attributes which describe my “Target Market” for my portrait and wedding photography business:

Attribute #1 of my Target Market: I go after Females 25 – 65: Why is this important? Because I have found that as a basic guideline, men do not invest in the type and style of photography I create. So why bother trying to reach them and motivate them to call me? It’s a waste of time and money.

Attribute #2 of my Target Market: I go after “Warm Fuzzies”: This is a term I use to refer to a person who is sensitive and emotional. She cries at movies. She is “right brain dominant” – meaning that she lives most of her life in “right brain” – the emotional, creative side of the brain, and only a small part of her life in “left brain” (the logical, analytical side of the brain.) Why is this desirable? Because we know people invest in photography for emotional reasons – not logical reasons.

Attribute #3 of my Target Market: I go after those folks who value what I do: Why is this important? Because I learned a long time ago that it really hurts to put all the work into creating beautiful portraits or wedding photography for someone who really doesn’t value what I do. I put all that time and effort into it only to have them not like the images, and not invest much in them either.

Can you see how having this “Target Market” in the front of my mind at all times really helps my business be more successful? Why? Because I know exactly who I want to reach with my photography marketing efforst. So I can carefully figure out where these people live, work, shop, eat, etc. and then go after them – and only them.

Once you have defined your Target Market, then you start asking yourself what are the best ways to become a “big fish” in that small “pond.” You basically don’t waste your time going after anyone else. You just stay focused on your Target Market and work hard on reaching them.

For example, once you know one of the characteristics of your Target Market is that they are “Warm Fuzzies”, you start showing only really warm and fuzzie images on your displays and exhibits all over town. The “Cold Pricklies” (the other side of the human coin) won’t like those images, and won’t call you. But the “Warm Fuzzies” will love them, and therefore call you. See how it works?

Defining your Target Market, in as much detail as possible, will greatly improve the effectiveness of your marketing for your photography business, whether you are marketing online or offline, or both.

Stuck For Photography Career Ideas Here’s 5…

  • Posted on May 23, 2015 at 1:04 pm
Shawn says hello to his KPMG fans

Recently I was out and about with a friend who’s just completed an evening course in digital photography. He really does have the eye for a good shot and manages to always come up with original composures. However he had no idea how turn his talent into a career. He doesn’t want to do commercial photography regarding products etc, and that was as far as his thoughts went…How can someone so creative be, at the same time, so lacking in ideas?! So I thought I’d come up with a few options for him:

Portrait, Family & Baby Photography

Some photographers naturally find that they are betting at working with people. This can extend to either full on formal portraits or more candid shots. There is a great call for this style of photography today, but you have to be well rounded and able to produce a number of styles.

Many people still want the formal portrait photography, either single of family shots. While this doesn’t essentially lend itself to great creativity, this style will be more a test of your technical knowledge and people will expect a very high quality portrait.

However, more and more younger couples and families are enjoying the more candid ‘action’ portraits. This is where the photographer gets to be more creative and will set up a few scenarios while letting the family naturally engage with each other. While you don’t always get the ‘face first’ photograph, you often capture a more intimate feel of the subject.

Nature Photography

Many freelance photographers enjoy nature photography, whether just for personal interest or for any paid work. However nature photography isn’t just a ‘turn up and shoot’ option. To be successful you really should be passionate about this and the subject; patience is just as important as talent when dealing with nature photography.

Thorough research is essential. You must know your subject, where to find it? The best times to find it? How to approach? What equipment is needed? Don’t always expect to get the results you want from one sitting.

Build up your portfolio and submit your images to nature magazines or production companies and see where it could take you.

Travel Photography

Another one for the freelancer (unless you are very lucky and manage to affiliate yourself with travel / TV production companies) who wants to combine personal passions with work.

To stand out in this field you really need to be able to look at things in a way that others don’t. You may be taking shots of a landscape or monument that many have seen before, but can you make it seem new or original?

It’s not just packing up your camera and jumping on a plane however. Again, research is paramount. Learn the rules of the country and areas you want to photograph (not everyone welcomes a happy snapper). Try and visit areas that have relevance to world affairs. It’s not just about recording your journey; it’s making emotive reactions with people who may never have visited the area before.

Architectural Photography

For many city dwellers, the surrounding architecture and urban scenes are their landscapes and the recording of them is not only for commercial reasons but also for cultural recording.

There are many opportunities nowadays for an architectural photographer. Real Estate is of course a large industry to tap into; interior and exterior shots of building and residences and also their surrounding areas. You could also try architectural services and publications – going for structural shots, interiors and exteriors as well as works in progress. Proving yourself reliable and capable in this field could generate lots of repeat work.

There are also of course niches within this field – Historical publications, Religious publications (churches etc), Travel Publications etc.

Wedding Photography

Last but not least is one of the largest options for a professional photographer – wedding photography.

This is becoming less and less of a seasonal occupation now, with couples choosing more varied times of year for their nuptials. This means that you must be adaptable to light and weather conditions, while having the main skills of group and couple shots, being able to communicate with families without being an ‘intruder’ to the day.

The best wedding photographers are those whom you don’t realise are there all day. Often it’s a 2 man job nowadays, to get the mix of staged shots and candid shots. Versatility is also key, can you offer modern styles? Contemporary? Classical and traditional? You will find most couples have a definite idea of what they want.

Of course there are many other paths a photographer can go down, from sports and adventure work, newspaper photo-journalism to glamour work. Have a think about the subjects and styles you most enjoy and then see were this could take you. Be creative in your approach to who may want your pictures and never, never give up!

Advice On How To Brainstorm For Unique Photography Studio Names For Your New Business

  • Posted on May 23, 2015 at 4:05 am

A creative photography business requires a good name that can be obtained either through your own thoughts or other inspiring ideas.

Irrespective of whether the business is new or existing, there are various ways in which you can get some great names for your photography studio, some of which are provided below.

People often have this misleading notion that online business name generators do a great job in churning out suitable names. There is nothing to beat the human mind in doing a creative job, especially something like conjuring up unique names.

It has been found that seeking professional help in the matter of finding out a good name counts a lot these days. Instead of deciding on the best photography business name by themselves, business owners should definitely take the opinion of a variety of people who can provide better ideas.

A professional business name consultant could be out of the reach of a small photography business owner due to their prohibitive fees, but that need not deter you. Instead, you could take the help of a local marketing consultant who could advice you as per your budget.

Often, a name of a similar photography business may strike your mind as being attractive. You could take this as an inspiration and work on similar names to land up with a unique creation. You could also conduct an online search of similar business establishments too so as to get an idea about naming your company.

Initially, as you start devising names, you may come up on something which you may consider excellent and creative. But if you look into it further, you may find that this particular name has been used by many others prior to you.

You can also write down all the ideas and words which come into your head on paper and then start mixing and matching these words to come up with a unique combination. Given below are some ways in which you can come up with an excellent name.

Write down words which are linked to photography like ‘click’, ‘shutter’, ‘shoot’, etc. This could be the basis of selecting a good name for your business.

The words you use could also be related to the service you are providing and how it is unique from other similar businesses.

You could capitalize on the emotions of the customers by selecting words which appeal to their sentiments.

Names of local areas or landmarks could also be incorporated into your business name, especially if the service you offer is limited to that particular area. This is a unusual way in which you can catch the attention of the customer.

Sometimes, words totally unconnected to the business may sound appealing to customers. Examples like ‘ginger’ or ‘butterfly’ could be used to trigger an element of curiosity in people who may take a fancy to the particular name. You could think of many such random words.

If you keep an open mind, you will find that many things that are seen around you may inspire you in creating a unique name, thus getting your photography business to start on a high note.
